The plain guide
Your first 30 days
Dry January, a reset, or just cutting down — no drama.
Swap, don't white-knuckle
Line up an alcohol-free drink you actually like before you need it. Cravings are easier to beat with a good glass already in hand.
Have your pub answer ready
"A zero beer, please," or "soda, lime and bitters." Decide before you're stood at the bar.
Mind the first week
The first few days are the hardest. It gets easier fast — and better sleep turns up quickly.
Straight answers
Will I actually miss it?
Less than you'd think, once you've a drink in hand you enjoy. The ritual matters more than the alcohol — and modern alcohol-free drinks give you the ritual back.
What do I order at the pub?
Most pubs now keep a zero beer or two. Failing that: soda, lime and a dash of Angostura bitters looks and tastes like a proper drink. Order it with confidence and no one blinks.
Is "alcohol-free" really 0%?
Usually. In the UK, "alcohol-free" can be up to 0.05% and "de-alcoholised" up to 0.5% — roughly the trace in a ripe banana. "0.0%" means what it says. We'll flag which is which on every pick.
Is this about giving up for good?
Not necessarily. Cutting down counts. This is for anyone drinking less, for any reason — forever, for a month, or just tonight.
